A talented midfielder from Edmonton, Alberta, Francesco Saporito joined Whitecaps FC Residency in Sept. 2011 following training stints in England and Italy.
Saporito travelled to London, England, to train with the youth academy set-ups of Charlton Athletic FC and Fulham FC.
The midfielder also had training spells with the youth programs of Italian Serie A giants Juventus and AC Milan.
Saporito started his soccer career with Edmonton Internazionale Soccer Club, where he played for the club in the Edmonton Interdistrict Youth Soccer Association from 2006 to 2011. As a member of Edmonton Internazionale’s U-14 Tier I side, the midfielder helped them to the 2011 Alberta U-14 provincial championship title. Saporito also represented Alberta at the U-13 level in 2009 and 2010 before helping his home province to a bronze medal at the 2011 Canadian U-15 All-Star Championship in St. John’s, Newfoundland. It was also in 2011 that the midfielder was invited to train in the Canadian Soccer Association’s National Training Centre (Prairies region) program. Then as a member of Edmonton’s Saint Francis Xavier Soccer Academy, Saporito played in the Torneo Pecci in Rimini, Italy, in 2010 and 2011, as well as the 2011 Torneo Padova U-14 invitational tournament in Padova, Italy.
Saporito represented Canada's U-15 boys' team at an eight-team tournament in Mexico in June 2012.
Born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta, the midfielder’s parents are Carmen and Franco Saporito. A former Canadian Soccer League professional with Edmonton Brick Men, Franco is the program director/head coach of Edmonton’s Saint Francis Xavier Soccer Academy. The midfielder also has a sister named Marie-Jeanne and a brother named Aurelio. As a student in Edmonton, Alberta, Saporito attended St. Philip Elementary School from 2002 to 2009 before attending Cardinal Léger Junior High School from 2009 to 2011.
An accomplished athlete, Saporito was an Edmonton City track & field gold medalist in the 400, 800, and 1,500 meters in 2010 and 2011. A fan of English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur FC, the midfielder is an admirer of Spurs and Croatia midfielder Luka Modric. One day, Saporito would like to play for Whitecaps FC on Bell Pitch at BC Place and at Spurs’ White Hart Lane home. When not concentrating on his soccer career, Saporito enjoys basketball, Taekwondo, reading, volleyball, and playing FIFA on PlayStation. His favourite foods are lasagna and chicken wings.
