Whitecaps FC put in strong team performance in second CCL U-13 match

Vancouver Whitecaps FC played their second match at the 2016 CONCACAF U-13 Champions League on Sunday in Mexico City. The young 'Caps put in a solid team performance, despite an eventual 2-0 defeat against Costa Rica's Liga Deportiva Alajuelense

The Blue and White were very sharp at the start of the match, dominating possession and moving the ball well. Head coach James Merriman noted an improved intensity as the team created a number of chances, but were unable to finish as the two sides went into the break tied at 0-0.

In the second half, the boys again came out with great energy but conceded an early goal from a set piece. However that would not change their play as they continued to be strong in possession and create scoring chances, but no goals would come for the Canadian side as the Costa Ricans put in a second as the 'Caps pushed forward late in the match.

"It's a tough loss, but a very positive performance," Merriman told after the match. "The boys definitely deserved more with the way they played."

The 'Caps will play their final Group B match on Monday against Mexican side Menor Tijuana in their home country.

Whitecaps FC are in Group B alongside Comunicaciones FC, LD Alajuelense, and Menor Tijuana. The top two teams from each group will advance to the quarterfinals.
