Following their participation in the 2016 U-13 CONCACAF Champions League, Vancouver Whitecaps FC’s young Residency players continued their week in Mexico City with a friendly match against Jamaica’s Harbour View FC on Wednesday.
In another strong overall performance from the group, the ‘Caps won 4-2 over their Caribbean opponents.
The Jamaicans came out strong with physical, skillful, and fast strikers and took an early 1-0 lead. But our Canadian boys responded with two good goals – first from Massud Habibullah, followed by an excellent volley from Kameron Habibullah to go up 2-1.
Harbour View FC answered right back on a superb free kick hit well into the top corner from the edge of the 18-yard box to make it 2-2 at halftime.
In the second half, the young ‘Caps adjusted and came out with more fluid possession, starting to create more chances. Two more goals from Massud Habibullah gave him a hat-trick on the day as the team played to a well-earned 4-2 victory.
“We’re happy with the growth of the group, both individually and collectively,” head coach James Merriman told whitecapsfc.com after the match. “This was another positive step as a young and new team today.”
In between their time on the field, the team and their families have had time to visit some of the local sites of Mexico City.
