London Youth Whitecaps applying to join Ontario Player Development League (OPDL)

LONDON, ON – Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced on Wednesday that London Youth Whitecaps are applying for a license to enter the Ontario Player Development League (OPDL). Teams would begin play in 2018 at the U-13 level for both males and females.

The OPDL is a high-performance, standards-based league that is part of the Ontario Soccer Association’s commitment to adopt Long-Term Player Development principles, and to create an elite environment in regards to training, support, competition, and organization.

“Our goal is to provide the best possible player development model at each of our academy centre locations,” said Whitecaps FC academy centre director Bart Choufour. “In only a year, our London Youth Whitecaps academy has already made tremendous progress. The OPDL aligns with our vision to continue to push players in a challenging environment that will help them progress through the pathway.”

The OPDL currently consists of 21 members, including fellow MLS club Toronto FC.

London Youth Whitecaps were launched in July of 2015 as part of the Whitecaps FC Academy Centre network, which consists of regional training hubs linked through key staff, curriculum, and standards that provide professional supplemental training for serious, motivated players. Planning and curriculum are overseen by Bart Choufour, director and head coach of Whitecaps FC Academy Centres.
