CARSON, CALIFORNIA – Vancouver Whitecaps FC U-16 Residency boys wrapped up their 2016-17 Development Academy season on Sunday, falling 3-2 to Real Salt Lake AZ in the third place match.
The young ‘Caps finish the season among the top four teams out of 73 in the Development Academy league.
Head coach Adam Day made one change to the starting lineup from Friday’s semifinal against Atlanta, as Nikolas White returned to centre back in place of Keenan Foley.
RSL opened the scoring on 20 minutes when Pedro Mondragon finished an opportunity, putting the ‘Caps down 1-0.
Goalkeeper Evan Ince – who has been in top form for the young ‘Caps – kept the Blue and White in the match four minutes later when he stopped Development Academy leading goalscorer Sebastian Soto on a breakaway.
In the second half, RSL doubled their lead in the 56th minute on a free kick goal from Luis Arriaga. Soto then finished the scoring for RSL with a goal in the 63rd minute to make it 3-0.
But the 'Caps would not give up, and it was captain Alessandro Hojabrpour leading the way, first assisting on a goal from substitute Keenan Foley, then by scoring himself to bring the deficit to 3-2 with less than 10 minutes remaining.
A terrific late push from the boys would fall just short, as the final whistle concluded a strong overall season for the 'Caps U-16 boys.
The Residency program now takes a short break before returning to training in August for the start of the 2017-18 Development Academy season in September. To apply to host a player as a billet family, visit whitecapsfc.com/billet.
