Whitecaps FC Academy teams sweep Portland Timbers to kick off new season

Vancouver Whitecaps FC Academy teams kicked off the Development Academy season with a sweep of rivals Portland Timbers Academy on the road Saturday.

U-19

The U-19s began the new season with a 2-1 win over the Timbers.

Simon Colyn opened the scoring 10 minutes in, continuing a great week after a goal with the Development Squad at USL side Fresno FC on Wednesday. But Portland equalized just before halftime to make it 1-1.

In the second half, newcomer Vasco Fry scored in the 61st minute for the victory. Goalkeeper Justyn Sandhu earned the victory in net.

U-17

The U-17s put forth an emphatic effort with a 6-0 final score over their Cascadia rivals, with every goal coming in the first half.

Brandon Cambridge scored the first goal 13 minutes into the match.

Kamron Habibullah then doubled the lead, followed by brother Massud Habibullah,

Matteo de Brienne, and two from Emiliano Brienza.

Chituru Odunze recorded the clean sheet in net for the ‘Caps.

“The boys started the game on the front foot and kept the pedal down the entire first half,” U-17 head coach Rich Fagan told whitecapsfc.com after the match. “Portland made the second half a dog fight, never giving up. Full credit to our players for managing the match in a professional manner.”

U-15

The U-15s fought hard for a 2-1 win versus the men in green.

Newcomer Joshué Ndakala opened the scoring in the 17th minute.

The Timbers then found an equalizer in minute 68, but Theo Afework would net the winner on a penalty kick 11 minutes later.

Goalkeeper Harrison Gough secured the win in net.

“Playing our first league match of the season on the road at Portland allowed us the opportunity to continue to unite and grow as a group, after a good preseason,” noted U-15 head coach Scott Howey. “Portland came out determined to set the tone on their home pitch and pushed until the end. It was pleasing to see the work we have done in preseason come alive with the players implementing our key foundation work.”
