The best varsity soccer players from across Canada have convened right here in Vancouver for the 2018 U SPORTS national men’s soccer championship.
This year’s championship tournament is being hosted by the UBC Thunderbirds, who have a strong Whitecaps FC contingent on their roster. UBC play their first match on Thursday night at Thunderbird Stadium as they take on the Carleton Ravens at 6:30 p.m. PT.
Among the ‘Caps connections are 10 players who have been in the club’s Academy or youth system: Manraj Bains, Caleb Clarke, Sean Einarsson, Nick Fussell, Thomas Gardner, Brian Im, Daniel Kaiser, Riley Pang, Mitch Piraux, and Liam Robinson. On Wednesday, Gardner was named a U SPORTS All-Canadian and Rookie of the Year, while he previously was named Canada West Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year.
The other universities competing are fellow local side Trinity Western University, as well as York University, the University of Montreal, the University of New Brunswick, Cape Breton University, and L'Université du Québec à Montréal.
The action runs from November 8 until the final on November 11. Ticket information is available at gothunderbirds.ca/msn.
