Canada now know their opponents for the quarterfinals of the 2018 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Uruguay, as they sit three wins away from glory.
The Red and White will face Germany this coming Sunday, November 25 at 2 p.m. PT. The match will be broadcast live on TSN Direct, TSN GO, and TSN.ca.
Captain Jordyn Huitema will be eligible to return to the lineup after scoring the winning goal in each of the first two Group D matches, which saw Canada secure their quarterfinal place with six points. Huitema was shown a controversial red card in the second half of the second match versus South Korea, which resulted in her missing the group finale against Spain.
Huitema is one of six players on the roster from the Whitecaps FC Girls Elite REX program in partnership with BC Soccer, along with Teni Akindoju, Caitlin Shaw, Jazmine Wilkinson, Andersen Williams, and Ariel Young. All five players earned playing time during the group stage.
Canada finished as runners-up in Group D behind Spain, and ahead of South Korea and Colombia. Germany enter the quarterfinals having won Group C over North Korea, the United States, and Cameroon.
This is the fourth time that Canada have made it as far as the quarterfinals, having previously reached this stage in 2008, 2012, and 2014. The Germans best finish was third place during the inaugural tournament in 2008.
The winner between Canada and Germany will face the winner of Ghana versus Mexico in the semifinals on Wednesday, November 28.
