Academy Report: U-17s and U-19s both roll on Winter Showcase Day 2

LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL – Whitecaps FC Academy teams were back in action on Friday at the 2018 Development Academy Winter Showcase.


The U-17s rolled to a 3-1 win over Solar SC in their opening match of the showcase.

Brandon Cambridge was taken down in the box on 15 minutes, with Massud Habibullah netting the penalty kick for a 1-0 lead. Amir Batyrev doubled the advantage in the 54th minute, cutting onto his right foot at the top of the box and striking a perfectly placed shot into the bottom corner. Habibullah added his second on 60 minutes, finishing a breakaway after he was sent through by Emiliano Brienza.

"We came out prepared and ready to play against an opponent that's had a great season thus far," noted assistant coach Dalibor Plavsic. "Some things will need to be tidied up, and we have two more matches here to improve them. Our focus is now on tomorrow against our MLS counterparts. As coaches, we'll continue to set the standards high for the group."

The U-17s are back in action on Saturday against New England Revolution. Kickoff will be at 7 a.m. PT.

The U-19s played with speed and precision as they earned a 6-1 win over Virginia's Richmond United, who came into the match at the top of the Atlantic Division.

Thomas Raimbault opened the scoring in the 33rd minute, cutting across to tap in a cross from Christopher Lee. Simon Colyn then doubled the advantage just before halftime, finishing a breakaway after he was sent in by Vasco Fry.

The second half started with a bang, as a perfect corner kick from Colyn was headed in by Raimbault for his third goal in two matches at the Winter Showcase. Colyn then scored his second goal of the game on 66 minutes on a lunging header from a Gabriel Escobar cross.

The final two goals came via Albert Kang, after a tiki-taka build-up form Jose Hernandez and Jefferson Alade, and on a breakaway finish from Keisean Brooks.

The U-19s have a day off on Saturday before wrapping up their play in the Winter Showcase on Sunday against Canadian rivals Montreal Impact.
