GA Cup: 'Caps split results in first two matches of regional qualifying second round

LOS ANGELES, CA – Vancouver Whitecaps FC U-15 and U17 Academy teams played their first two of three matches in the second round of regional qualifying matches for the 2019 Generation adidas Cup on Friday and Saturday.


The U-17s opened with a 4-0 win over Colorado Rapids. Emiliano Brienza scored two goals, with Owen Antoniuk and Massud Habibullah netting the others. Chituru Odunze kept the clean sheet in net.

The U-15s fell 1-0 in their battle with the Rapids.


The U-17s fell 2-1 in a closely contested match against the host LA Galaxy. Massud Habibullah opened the scoring on a penalty kick, but the Galaxy scored two goals in quick succession after the 60th minute mark for the final score.

The U-15s came out firing in a 3-0 win over Cascadia rivals Portland Timbers. Theo Afework scored twice and Thomas Budisa converted a penalty kick in the victory. Harrison Gough had the clean sheet in net.


The 'Caps wrap-up regional qualifying on Monday. The U-17s play San Jose Earthquakes at 9 a.m. PT and the U-15s play LAFC at 11 a.m. PT.

The U-17s will be pushing for a final win before finding out if they are in moving on to the Champions Division or the Premier Division for the final stage.

The U-15s will look to finish their GA Cup run at the top of their group, as they will be not be playing in the final phase as they head abroad for an international tournament at the same time later in the year.
