VICTORIA, BC – On Tuesday the Vancouver Whitecaps FC Development Squad traveled to the island to take on the Victoria Highlanders FC Futures team, falling 1-0 on a late goal.
Head coach Nick Dasovic welcomed a number of players into his group for the first time while playing eight players currently on Whitecaps FC Academy teams.
The ‘Caps had a pair of first half chances. A Brendan McDonough header off a corner kick went into the goalkeeper’s hands on 30 minutes. Five minutes later Chance Carter was in on goal, only to have his shot blocked by the defender.
Despite carrying the majority of possession, the Highlanders struck late after a scramble in the box on 88 minutes. The ‘Caps had a couple of late chances to equalize. Connor Guilherme had a header go inches over the crossbar before Emiliano Brienza hit the post in the final moments.
“We had plenty of possession, but we need to be more ruthless,” noted Dasovic after the match. “The players know they need to continue to improve individually and collectively, and we will continue to challenge them each week to do so.”
Next up for the Development Squad will be a closed door match in Calgary against Canadian Premier League side Cavalry FC, followed by a trip to England at the end of the month.
