Academy Report: 'Caps defeat Toluca to conclude dominant group play

FRISCO, TX – Whitecaps FC U-17 academy boys completed a clean sweep of their Generation adidas Cup group matches with a dominant 3-0 win over Mexican club Toluca FC on Wednesday.

15-year-old Kam Habibullah, the youngest player on the field, opened the scoring with a smashing strike minutes before halftime. Moments later, a great run and cross from winger Brandon Cambridge was finished by Owen Antoniuk, who had subbed in for an injured Simon Colyn in the first half.

In the second half, the Habibullah brothers combined down the right flank as Massud crossed in for Antoniuk to blast in his second of the match to make it 3-0.

Later, goalkeeper Chituru Odunze came up with a pair of terrific saves on two rare chances from Toluca. Late in the match Kam Habibullah was shown a red card, leaving the 'Caps with 10 men for the final 10 minutes.

Whitecaps FC finished group play by winning all five of their matches, scoring 14 times and not conceding a single goal. However, due to the Generation adidas Cup cross-over group format from Group C, Columbus Crew SC also went unbeaten versus Group D and advanced to the semifinals on goals scored.

The 'Caps will look to maintain their unbeaten record as they play two more placement matches on Thursday and Friday
