Canada Soccer have announced their squad for the women’s national U-17 Excel camp in Markham, Ontario scheduled from September 22 to 27. The six-day camp, featuring players born 2003 or later, will continue Canada’s preparations for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2020.
Four players were called up from the Whitecaps FC Girls Elite REX program in partnership with BC Soccer. Those players include defender Mia Pante, midfielders Hannah Duguid and Isabella Muzzolini, and forward Holly Ward.
This will mark the first U-17 camp since Rhian Wilkinson officially took charge as Canada Soccer’s women’s national U-20 and U-17 team head coach. Wilkinson was recently appointed to the position coming through Canada Soccer’s Elite Player-Elite Coach program. She has worked with several Canadian teams through the Women’s Excel Program since 2014, includes roles as an assistant coach at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Canada 2014 and FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019™ as well as head coach for Canada’s fourth-place finish at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Uruguay 2018.
The September camp features players from Canada Soccer’s Regional EXCEL Centres from across Canada, where Canada’s most talented U-14 to U-18 players are offered a specialised daily training environment. This marks the second of three national camps this year as Canada Soccer builds towards next year’s Concacaf Women’s Under-17 Championship in the first quarter of 2020 (with dates and location not yet announced).
“We are still looking at our depth and making sure are prepared for next year’s Concacaf Women’s Under-17 Championship,” said Rhian Wilkinson, Canada Soccer’s women’s national U-20 and U-17 head coach. “There is a lot of good talent in Canada and we are staying connected with our Regional EXCEL Centres in order to make the best selections possible for next year’s tournaments and the future of the women’s national team program.”
