BMO Academy Report: 'Caps finish strong opening round of GA Cup qualifying

Whitecaps FC U-17 and U-15 academy teams kicked off qualifying for the 2020 Generation adidas Cup this past weekend in Colorado, taking on MLS academy rivals from FC Dallas, Colorado Rapids, and Los Angeles Football Club.

U-17

Friday vs. FC Dallas

The U-17s kicked off with a 2-1 win over FC Dallas. The victory was the first for the ‘Caps over the FC Dallas academy.

After going down a goal early, Oliver Herbert levelled the match on a 60th minute penalty kick. Substitute Dale Reas-Do drove into the box, causing the defender to fall over and handle the ball. Herbert smashed it down the middle for 1-1.

On 75 minutes, Muslim Umar scored the winner. Another substitute, Yayo Mutombo, dribbled down the right then slipped the ball between the centre back and fullback to Umar to sprint onto and strike past the goalkeeper.

Saturday vs. Colorado Rapids

After a hard fought match, the end of regulation brought a 0-0 score and a point to each team. The ‘Caps then buried all five of their penalty kicks to take the extra point over the hosts. Ben Alexander secured the clean sheet in net.

Monday vs, LAFC

The ‘Caps played to another 0-0 regulation result against LAFC. Goalkeeper Ben Alexander came up with a huge save on a dramatic penalty shot with the last kick of regulation. Whitecaps FC then won 5-4 in penalty kicks.

The result left them tied for first place in Group A with seven points after the first round of qualifying.

U-15

Friday vs. FC Dallas

The U-15s also nearly came away with a win against FC Dallas, but ultimately earned one point in a 1-1 draw before Dallas took the extra point in penalty kicks.

Max Comsia scored the goal for the ‘Caps, assited by Joel Demian.

Saturday vs. Colorado Rapids

The second match ended in a 2-0 win over the hosts.

Michael Hennessy scored on a penalty kick for the first, and Dario Fedele tapped in a rebound for the second.
