VANCOUVER, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced on Tuesday that defensive midfielder Andrés Cubas has agreed to a Designated Player contract extension through to the end of 2026, with a club option for 2027.
“Since joining the club in April 2022, Andrés has proven to be a key piece in our system and one of the best players in the league in his position,” said Axel Schuster, Whitecaps FC sporting director. “Andrés and his family have embraced our club and city and we are very pleased to confirm he will be with us for the long term. Andrés has already won back-to-back Canadian Championships and he will play a big part in helping us achieve our goals this year and beyond.”

Cubas, 27, has started 40 of his 42 appearances across all competitions with the ‘Caps since making his debut against Seattle Sounders FC on June 14, 2022, scoring one goal and adding one assist.
This season, the Paraguayan international, who was named the club’s Player of the Month for March, has made 22 appearances across all competitions and sits in the top 10 in the league for interceptions (34) and top 10 in the Western Conference in tackles (28). Most recently, Cubas was named to the MLS Team of the Matchday after helping the ‘Caps secure a 3-2 away victory against defending MLS Cup champions Los Angeles FC in Matchday 21.
During his time with the club, Cubas has helped Vancouver secure back-to-back Canadian Championship titles, starting two matches in both the 2022 and 2023 editions of the tournament.
Prior to joining Whitecaps FC, Cubas played for French side Nîmes Olympique, where he led Ligue 2 in successful tackles per match (2.6) and tallied the second most interceptions (2.7) during the 2021/22 season. In his first year in France, he finished tied for the sixth-most successful tackles per match in Ligue 1 with 1.7, starting all 27 of his appearances.
Cubas has recorded 209 appearances at the club level, having also played for Italian side Delfino Pescara 1936, as well as Argentinian sides Boca Juniors, Defensa y Justicia, and Club Atlético Talleres after coming through Boca’s famed academy.
Internationally, Cubas has started 12 of his 14 appearances for Paraguay in World Cup Qualifying, Copa America and friendly competition. The defensive midfielder last suited up for Paraguay in an international friendly against Chile on March 27 at Estadio Monumental David Arellano in Macul, Chile, starting and playing the full 90 minutes. Cubas previously played for Argentina at the U-20 level, where he started two of his three appearances for the side at the 2015 U-20 World Cup in New Zealand.
