VANCOUVER, BC – Whitecaps FC 2 fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat to St. Louis CITY2 at the National Soccer Development Centre in Vancouver, BC.
The young 'Caps would get the first big chance of the match in the 10th minute as St. Louis CITY2 goalkeeper Christian Olivares came off his line and directed his clearance into the path of Lowell Wright. The striker attempted to chip the ball into the empty net but saw his left-footed strike go just wide of the target.
Both sides exchanged possession in the first half, with neither finding the breakthrough.
The deadlock would be broken in the 57th minute by CITY2, as Faysal Bettache put home a rebound from close range to give the away side the 1-0 lead.
A couple minutes later, WFC2 goalkeeper Isaac Boehmer was forced into a key save by St. Louis winger John Klein, carefully gathering a shot headed towards the bottom corner.
The away side came close to doubling their lead through Lucas Bartlett, who's tight-angled shot was cleared off the line by WFC2 centre back Matteo Campagna.
Whitecaps FC 2 are back at home against San Jose Earthquakes II on Saturday, September 16.
