HERRIMAN, UT – Whitecaps FC 2 fell on the road against fellow Western Conference side Real Monarchs SLC on Sunday afternoon, dropping a 3-2 result at Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman, Utah.
Monarchs got on the board first as Antonio Riquelme fed Lineker Rodrigues in the box. The latter was able to avoid a couple challenges and send a low shot into the bottom corner to give the home side a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute.
Rodrigues would grab his second just before the halftime interval, getting on the end of a deflected cross at the back post and side-footing home for the 2-0 advantage.
Marcos Zambrano-Delgado would add a third for the Monarchs in the 60th minute after getting in behind the WFC2 backline.
However, the young 'Caps found a response as Ryder Sewell was fouled inside the box, forcing the referee to point to the spot. Liam Mackenzie stepped up and calmly slotted home his third goal of the season,
Sewell was once again at the heart of the attack in stoppage time, as he powerfully dribbled towards the Monarchs' final third. The youngster was afforded plenty of space and unleashed a perfectly-placed right-footed strike into the bottom corner.
Sewell had another chance to find the equalizer off a Nikola Djordjevic cross, but saw his headed effort scrape just wide of the far post.
In the end, the young 'Caps would push on for the equalizer but came just short, with the full three points going the way of the Monarchs.
Next up for WFC2 is their first match of the season at Swangard Stadium, which is set for next Saturday, March 28 against LAFC2. Kickoff is at 4 p.m. PT.
