WFC2 earn shootout win in first road match

FULLERTON, CA – Whitecaps FC 2 earned two points from a shootout victory after drawing 1-1 in regulation against Western Conference side LAFC2 this Sunday evening at Titan Stadium.

The first half had the home side scoring the opening goal of the match. Erik Dueñas’ won the ball with a sliding tackle off of Isaac Boehmer, and his left footed strike inside the area gave his squad a 1-0 lead inside the 16th minute.

Later in the first half, Elage Bah’s run inside the box concluded with a pass which connected to Kamron Habibullah. The midfielder’s strike would level the match for WFC2 in the 32nd minute.

The young 'Caps piled on the opportunities in the second half. In the 79th minute, Levonte Johnson struck a low shot from the top of the box off of the post, and Habubullah his a follow-up shot just wide of the target.

The young ‘Caps would continue to find opportunities throughout the rest of half, but in the 88th minute midfielder was shown a second yellow card and subsequent red card. Per MLS NEXT Pro rules, he will not miss the next match, but instead will be suspended for the next time that WFC2 face LAFC2 on June 22.

In the end, the match concluded 1-1, with a penalty shootout to decide the extra point per MLS NEXT Pro rules.

Boehmer would redeem himself from the lone goal conceded, making three saves in the shootout before Wright would end up scoring the winning penalty to give his team the extra point.

WFC2 play again on the road next weekend against North Texas SC on Sunday, April 9 at Choctaw Stadium. The young ‘Caps return home to Swangard Stadium for a matchup versus LA Galaxy 2 on Sunday, April 16 with a 7 p.m. PT kickoff.
