FIFA U-20 World Cup: Herdman helps New Zealand capture opening day win over Guatemala

SANTIAGO DEL ESTERO, ARGENTINA – Whitecaps FC 2 midfielder Jay Herdman started and played 89 minutes as New Zealand claimed a 1-0 victory against Guatemala in their opening match of the FIFA U-20 World Cup at Estadio Único Madre de Ciudades in Santiago Del Estero, Argentina.

Substitute Norman Garbett scored the winner in the 79th minute as he chipped the ball over the onrushing Guatemalan goalkeeper to give the All Whites all three points on opening day.

Whitecaps FC 2 centre back Finn Linder was an unused substitute in the match.

Herdman and Linder will look to help New Zealand build on their positive start to the tournament as they face Uzbekistan in their second match in Group A on Tuesday, May 23 at Estadio Único Madre de Ciudades in Santiago Del Estero, Argentina. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. PT.
