HERRIMAN, UT – Whitecaps FC 2 fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat to Real Monarchs SLC at Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman, Utah on Friday night.
The young 'Caps would get the first big chance of the match in the 17th minute, as Mihail Gherasimencov put a low cross into the box for Joe Hanson, who saw his first-time effort saved by Monarch goalkeeper William Mackay.
Just before the halftime interval, the Monarchs had a chance to open the scoring but Zavier Gozo put his shot in front of the goal wide of the near post, meaning the two teams would go into the break scoreless.
Antoine Coupland came close to putting WFC2 in the lead at the start of the second half. Whitecaps FC BMO MLS Academy product Jeevan Badwal played a line-splitting pass into the path of Coupland, who unleashed a powerful right-footed strike that narrowly missed the top corner.
The Monarchs would open the scoring in the 68th minute, as Bobby Pierre whipped a cross into the box for Delentz Pierre to head into the back of the net to give the home side a 1-0 lead.
In the 80th minute, substitute Lowell Wright came close to finding the equalizer with a sizzling strike from distance, forcing Mackay to parry the shot out for a WFC2 corner.
Five minutes later, Elage Bah burst into the Monarchs box and was brought down but no penalty kick was awarded.
Whitecaps FC 2 are back at home against St. Louis CITY2 on Saturday, September 9.
