HERRIMAN, UT – Whitecaps FC 2 (WFC2) grabbed a 3-1 penalty shootout win against Real Monarchs after drawing 2-2 in regulation.
With little action in the first half, the game would see plenty of action in the second half.
Real Monarchs took the 1-0 lead in the 56th minute through a penalty kick which was converted by midfielder Pedro Fonseca,
Moments later, Real Monarchs defender Ethan Zamora received his second yellow card of the match leave the home team playing the rest of the match down by ten men.
WFC2 tied the match in the 81st minute, as midfielder Giovanni Aguilar scored the club's first-ever goal in MLS NEXT Pro off a cross from wingback Ali Ahmed.
The away side would grab the lead in the 86th minute as midfielder Jay Herdman served in a set piece to Aguilar, who headed in his second goal of the match.
In the final moments of the game, Real Monarchs were awarded another penalty in stoppage time, with Fonseca scoring his second of the match to tie it up at 2-2.
The game concluded in a penalty shootout, with MLS SuperDraft pick Simon Becher scoring the winning penalty to give WFC2 their first win of the season.
Up next for WFC2 is their home opener next Sunday, April 10 at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, BC as they face Cascadia rivals Portland Timbers 2.
