Alphonso Davies named to MLS Team of the Week after starring in season opener

Davies celebration - first MLS goal

Alphonso Davies was named to the MLS Team of the Week on Monday after a star-studded performance that saw him record a goal and an assist in a 2-1 win for Vancouver Whitecaps FC in Sunday’s season opener against Montreal Impact.

The goal was the first in MLS for the Canadian youngster, making him the 10th youngest goalscorer in league history at 17 years, four months, and two days.

It was a star showing for Davies, as he managed to complete a game-high six dribbles (beating a defender one v one) – just one short of the highest total of any player in 2017.

In the 63rd minute of Sunday’s match, Davies swung in a dangerous cross from a wide position to an onrushing Kei Kamara, who’s flicked header put the ‘Caps up 1-0.

Cue dance moves.

Davies wasn’t done there. In the 70th minute, a perfectly-placed low cross from Cristian Techera found the feet of the 17-year-old, who scored the eventual game-winner with a first-time finish.

“It was a big weight off my shoulders to get that first goal,” Davies said. “I was excited to get it. It took a while, but I try to help the team. I could go all year without scoring if that’s what it takes to win the MLS Cup, that’s the most important thing.”

In the 81st minute, the ‘Caps winger was substituted to a standing ovation from a record breaking home crowd that saw 27,837 fans pack the lower bowl at BC Place.

Whitecaps FC now head on the road for two games that see them play Houston Dynamo and Atlanta United, before returning to BC Place on March 24 to take on LA Galaxy.
