VANCOUVER, BC – BC Place was rocking on Saturday evening as Vancouver Whitecaps put five past FC Dallas in a dominant 5-0 win, perching themselves back atop the Western Conference.
The 'Caps had an electric start to the match, charging right at FC Dallas from the first whistle.
Brian White generated two scoring chances early on. First, the the forward blocked FC Dallas ‘keeper Jonathan Sirois’ clearance in the opening minutes. Not long later, Édier Ocampo drilled a low cross to the strikers’ feet, but his clever backheel pass to the onrushing Ryan Gauld was blocked before the captain could fire it home.
The 'Caps wouldn’t have to wait much longer to get the opening goal, as Emmanuel Sabbi latched onto a loose clearance at the back corner of the box and fired a low shot across goal to make it 1-0.
Ocampo nearly made it 2-0 in the 13th minute after a slick team play found the wingback at the back post, but his laser towards the near post was parried wide by Sirois.
The ‘Caps found their second in the 23rd minute, after a lofted ball down the sideline from Tristan Blackmon found Ocampo. The Colombian’s first touch planted his marker and put him clean through, before cutting it across goal for White to tap in.
White almost got his second minutes later after Oliver Larraz found the forward streaking behind the defence, but a last-ditch tackle denied White from firing in a brace.
Dallas were unable to stop White a third time, as the striker thumped home a volley from inside the box after the Texan side failed to clear the lines on a corner, putting the ‘Caps three goals to the good in the 37th minute.
Dallas almost got one back in the 40th minute after Farrington was sent through on goal, but his shot ricocheted off the near post and out.
Whitecaps FC made it four in first half additional time after Andrés Cubas found Ocampo running at the back post, with the Colombian rising high and heading it over Sirois from an acute angle and into the back of the net.
The ‘Caps went into the break with a healthy lead and plenty of confidence.
The Blue and White started the first half as they finished the second, with Gauld driving into the box from the left and drilling a low shot just past the far post.
Ocampo tried to go for the audacious in the 50th minute, pulling off a bicycle kick from the edge of the box but the effort went over the bar.
Bruno Caicedo came off the bench and had a chance to make it five in the 64th minute, cutting inside from the left and drilling a shot towards the near post, but Sirois had it covered.
Caicedo wouldn’t miss a second chance, as the Ecuadorian got on the end of a one-two with Thomas Müller inside the box and powered it past Sirois for 5-0.
Ocampo almost had his second in the 79th minute after he found space on the right hand side, but his driven effort went just a whisker wide of the far post.
The ‘Caps then strolled to the finish line, securing the clean sheet and reclaiming the top spot in the West in emphatic fashion.
