'Caps drop road match in LA

Match Report at LA Galaxy

CARSON, CA – Vancouver Whitecaps FC fell to a 5-2 loss against Western Conference foes Los Angeles Galaxy at Dignity Health Sports Park this Saturday night.

The first half started early for the Galaxy, as a quick counter attack was built up from fullback Julián Araujo. His long through pass found Cabral on the right channel in the 12th minute of the match. The French winger then placed a ball in for his compatriot Samuel Grandsir, which was followed by a right footed finish to open the scoring early on.

The home side were given a penalty kick minutes later, as Javier Hernández’s panenka chip doubled his squad’s lead in the 20th minute of the match.

With LA continuing to press, Araujo’s run sent in a ball to Víctor Vázquez in the 30th minute. Hernández then played a quick one touch pass back to the midfielder, who’s strong right footed strike outside the box flew into the bottom right corner of the net.

As the half progressed, a long kick from goalkeeper Cody Cropper connected to Ryan Gauld in on goal, as the attacking midfielder found himself in opposing box and finished his run with a quick strike to cut the home side’s advantage in the 38th minute.

However, the Galaxy would continue with their attacking prowess. Araujo crossed in a ball to Grandsir, and the winger’s curled strike then found the back of the net, restoring his team’s advantage in the 40th minute of the match.

The second half saw the ‘Caps finding some rhythm. In the 70th minute, Cristian Dájome’s quick run on the left flank was followed with a pass connecting to Tosaint Ricketts inside the box, as the Canadian's one timed strike reduced the score to 4-2.

Momentum was halted in the 79th minute when Dájome was shown a second yellow card, as the 'Caps would finish down a man.

With the match nearing its end, the home side finished things off after Dejan Joveljic’s quick run on the right channel saw the substitute connect with Efraín Álvarez inside the box, further cushioning his side’s advantage in the 89th minute.

Up next for the ‘Caps is another Western Conference clash, as they host Colorado Rapids at BC Place this Wednesday, August 17. Kickoff set at 7 p.m. PT. For tickets, visit whitecapsfc.com/tickets.
