VANCOUVER, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC kept rolling with an important 4-2 win over Los Angeles Galaxy in their last match before the Leagues Cup begins at BC Place next Friday.

It was a hot and tense affair between the 'Caps and Galaxy, in a game that could have seen even more goals in front of an entertained Vancouver crowd.

It was another quick start for Whitecaps FC, opening the scoring inside the first two minutes of the game. Andrés Cubas lofted the ball towards Ryan Raposo on the left, who then cut inside and let loose a whipped cross. Brian White got on the end of it and flicked it down and past Galaxy ‘keeper Jonathan Bond to make it 1-0.

The ‘Caps would quickly double their advantage through Ryan Gauld, as Julian Gressel, on his return from international duty, drilled a cross into the box in the 10th minute. The cross was blocked but it fell to Gauld, who made no mistake and lashed a shot on the half-volley, nestling into the top corner.

Gauld would continue to throw himself into the thick of it, hitting the crossbar before Alessandro Schöpf followed with another crossbar.

The chaotic opening half would continue, with Brian White getting pulled down in the box by Chris Mavinga in the 19th minute. With Mavinga already on a yellow, he was given his marching orders before Gauld stepped up and got his second goal from the penalty spot to make it 3-0.

Gauld continued to press for a hat-trick and after a White lay-off, his shot would be well-saved by Bond, who could only parry it out of danger.

The Galaxy would then get a few chances, keeping Takaoka’s hands warm, but the half would end with three goals for the good for the ‘Caps.

Gastón Brugman would finally pull one back for the Galaxy in the second half, expertly volleying off a Riqui Puig corner in the 61st minute. The Galaxy would increase their possession despite having only 10 men, but Whitecaps FC would continue to create brilliant chances, including one for Gressel in the 70th minute that just went wide of the mark.

The Galaxy would claw one more back to 3-2 through some clever play from Preston Judd. Judd’s killer ball bypassed the ‘Caps’ defence, allowing Mark Delgado to put his shot in between the legs of Yohei Takaoka.

And while the Galaxy would press on to find an equalizer, the 'Caps would grab a late clincher through Sergio Córdova, putting away a rebound from a Deiber Caicedo shot at the death.

Whitecaps FC now turn their attention to the Leagues Cup, where they will look to win their second trophy of the season. The 'Caps kick off the tournament at home against Mexican powerhouse and Concacaf Champions League winners Club Léon this coming Friday, July 21 at 7:30 p.m. PT.
