Cascadia Cup Standings: 'Caps look to take stranglehold Sunday in Portland

Cascadia Cup - 2015

Vancouver Whitecaps FC will look to take a stranglehold in the 2016 Cascadia Cup standings on Sunday afternoon when they visit Portland Timbers at Providence Park (1:30 p.m. PT on TSN1).

The ‘Caps enter Sunday’s contest atop the Cascadia Cup standings with a perfect 2W-0L-0D record thus far, having defeated Seattle and Portland by identical 2-1 scorelines.

This will be the third Cascadia matchup of the year.

“It’s a game everybody wants to play,” said Whitecaps FC forward Kekuta Manneh, the MLS Player of the Week. “We played [Portland] last weekend and you saw the spirit from the guys. Everybody wants to win those kind of games. I think it’s great. We started really well in the standings. It’s a great rivalry.”

BACKGROUND

The Cascadia Cup represents one of the most passionate derby rivalries in North America.

Known for the region of North America that Vancouver, Seattle, and Portland represent, the Cascadia Cup was created by the supporters of Vancouver Whitecaps FC, Seattle Sounders FC, and Portland Timbers. Officially founded in 2004, the origins of the Cup date back to when all three clubs were members of the United Soccer Leagues First Division.

The combined fan-based organizations of the three clubs came together to produce the two-foot-tall silver Cascadia Cup, which is awarded annually to the team with the best head-to-head record in regular season matches between their Pacific Northwest rivals.

The fans created this competition – and it's the fans that make it so special.

"We want to win that Cascadia Cup, especially for the fans," said Whitecaps FC goalkeeper David Ousted. "I know how much it means to them, but to us players as well."

"Especially seeing the long way they travel," Ousted continued. "Six, seven, eight hours to Portland is a long way. But they make it out a thousand strong. It’s just a great atmosphere for us. It just gives that little bit of an extra edge when you’re playing those games."

REIGNING CHAMPS

The ‘Caps were going for a Cascadia Cup threepeat in 2015, but Seattle had other plans.

Seattle posted a 4W-2L-1D record against Vancouver and Portland last season, culminating with a Cascadia Cup-clinching 3-0 victory over Whitecaps FC at BC Place.

CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY

Although Seattle's supporters are currently in possession of the Cascadia Cup, the 'Caps remain the most successful club in competition history with five titles to their name.
