VANCOUVER, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC confirmed on Tuesday that defender Doneil Henry, and midfielders Alphonso Davies and Russell Teibert have been called up to the Canadian men’s national team ahead of 2019-20 Concacaf Nations League Qualifying this October.
Les Rouges face Dominica on October 16 at BMO Field in Toronto, a day before the 'Caps host Sporting Kansas City at BC Place. The match will be broadcast live on TSN at 4 p.m. PT.
“We want to play for the fans and win for the fans, it is that simple,” said John Herdman, Canada men’s national team head coach. “We hope the fans can join us on our journey towards the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar.”
In their first match of the qualifiers, the 'Caps trio was involved in Canada's dominant 8-0 win over US Virgin Islands, their all-time largest margin of victory, and the team’s most goals scored in a single match. Davies tallied two assists while playing the full 90 minutes with Henry, while Teibert was on the bench.
At stake in 2019-20 Concacaf Nations League Qualifying is a spot in the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup as well as the classification groups in Concacaf Nations League. From 68 qualifying matches, the top 10 nations will qualify for the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup while the top-six nations will additionally qualify for Concacaf Nations League "A".
In international competition, Davies has three goals in seven caps, and Teibert has one goal in 20 matches, while Henry has made 23 appearances.
Whitecaps FC are back in action this Saturday when they visit rivals Toronto FC at BMO Field. Kickoff is at 2 p.m. PT live on TSN1/4 and 1410 AM.
