Davies named to MLS Team of the Week after mesmerizing substitute appearance

Alphonso Davies - RSL

VANCOUVER, BC – Alphonso Davies has been named to the MLS Team of the Week after a mesmerizing substitute appearance on Friday night in a 2-0 win over Real Salt Lake.

Davies, who had a bad case of food poisoning mid-week, entered the match in the 62nd minute with the score level and made an immediate impact on the left wing. The youngster’s highlight of the night came in the 79th minute, when he blew by a pair of RSL defenders – with Whitecaps FC down to 10 men – and set up Anthony Blondell for a tap-in.

It was Davies’ third assist of the season, which is the most on the team and two back of the MLS leader. The 17-year-old has appeared in all nine of Vancouver’s matches this season, including seven starts.

Next up for Davies and the ‘Caps is a visit to Minnesota United FC on Saturday (11 a.m. PT on CTV, TSN1, and TSN 1040). Carl Robinson’s men will then return to BC Place for a pair of home matches against Houston Dynamo on Friday, May 11 and San Jose Earthquakes on Wednesday, May 16.
