VANCOUVER, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC confirmed today that midfielder Deybi Flores has been called up to the Honduras U-23 national team for a pre-Olympic camp in Colombia ahead of next month's Summer Games.
Final rosters must be submitted by July 14 - at which point Flores will learn if he's heading to Brazil. The 2016 Men's Football Olympic Tournament will be held from August 3 to 20 in six different cities across Brazil.
Flores, 20, has made six starts in seven total appearances for Western Conference-leading Whitecaps FC 2 in USL this season, recording one assist. Additionally, Flores had made one start for the first team, featuring in the Week 2 loss to Sporting Kansas City.
The San Pedro Sula native earned his first senior international cap last December, playing 22 minutes for a young Honduran side in their 2-0 friendly win versus Cuba at Estadio Juan Ramón Brevé Vargas in Juticalpa.
Flores most recently saw international action last June 4, coming on as a second-half substitute in the 2-2 draw versus host South Korea in the Four Nations U-23 Tournament in Goyang. In last year's FIFA U-20 World Cup in New Zealand, he played the full 90 minutes in all three matches for Los Catrachos. Flores helped Honduras qualify for the tournament when they finished second in Group B of the 2015 U-20 CONCACAF Championship, where he started all five of his tournament appearances, playing all 450 minutes of action.
The 5-foot-11 midfielder also donned his national team colours in the 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games, and the 2013 U-17 CONCACAF Championship.
Flores finished his first year with Whitecaps FC with 11 starts in 15 first team appearances across all competitions in 2015, including two appearances in the Amway Canadian Championship and all four CONCACAF Champions League matches.
