VANCOUVER, BC – In front of a boisterous crowd of 32,111, Vancouver Whitecaps FC proved why they are the top team in the Western Conference with a convincing 5-1 victory over Cascadia rivals Seattle Sounders FC.

The Blue and White (18W-7D-8L, 61 points) had already clinched home field advantage throughout the playoffs in the Western Conference bracket after Saturday's result, but continued to show that every match matters.

Striker Brian White’s historic brace set the tone, while captain Ryan Gauld, Mathias Laborda, and Aleksa Cvetković scored singles to salt the match away. Gauld, right back Édier Ocampo, and left winger Bruno Caicedo each collected two assists.

With three points taken, Whitecaps FC head coach Jesper Sørensen joined exclusive company. The Great Dane tied Atlanta United manager Gerardo Martino for the most points by a head coach in his first two MLS seasons with 124.

Only 56 seconds elapsed before the Blue and White drew first blood. Goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka’s lob began a series of passes that eventually found Gauld.

The Scot sent in Caicedo free and clear for a cross to the back post for White. A heartbeat later, an airborne White knifed above the Seattle back line to sweetly nod home into the top corner past flummoxed Sounders FC goalkeeper Andrew Thomas.

White’s emphatic header increased his all-time Whitecaps FC goal total across all competitions to 99.

Only eight minutes later, the Western kings doubled their lead. Yadaly Diaby whipped a through ball down the sideline for Ocampo, who impressively fought off Seattle left back Nouhou. With Nouhou left sprawled on the turf, Ocampo cracked a cross into the box – where captain Gauld’s powerful one-touch streaked in under the crossbar.

Twenty minutes in, Sounders FC striker Dejan Joveljić tested Takaoka from 25 yards out, but the ’keeper scrambled back for a sprawling parry.

Gauld replied when he found open space outside the area. His sublime looping cross dipped for a Laborda header that curved in for 3-0.

Then in the second half, White found scoring immortality. From a Caicedo low cross, the elite striker tapped home from a difficult angle for a brace. It was the striker’s historic 100th goal for the 'Caps – he became the first player in the club’s MLS era to reach the century milestone.

Seattle midfielder Jordan Morris spoiled Takaoka’s clean sheet bid at the hour.

On 63 minutes, Sørensen took White off in favour of 23-year-old Kwasi Poku, who made his Whitecaps FC and MLS debut. The Canadian international looked comfortable.

Six minutes later, Cvetković finished a pass from Cheikh Sabaly past Thomas for 5-1.

The Blue and White conclude the regular season in La Belle Province versus CF Montréal on Saturday, November 7 at 2 p.m. PCT. You can watch on Apple TV or check the ’Caps & Taps list to find the nearest bar showing the match.
