Girls Prospects wrap up Vegas trip

Vancouver Whitecaps U-18 Girls Prospects completed a weekend of action at the 2010 Las Vegas College Showcase.

Jesse Symons' side earned two wins and two defeats to finish fifth in the 'Encore Division' of the U-19 tournament, as the Blue and White faced some of the best youth clubs from around North America. The Las Vegas College Showcase is considered one of the top-ranked college showcase tournaments in the United States.

The Prospects started their tournament campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Northern California state champions De Anza Force SC 91 Blue on Friday morning. Vancouver's second match also ended in defeat, with California South club Slammers FC 91 North earning a 1-0 win after scoring from the penalty spot. This despite the young 'Caps hitting the crossbar on two occasions during the match.

Saturday morning brought better fortunes for the Whitecaps, as they defeated Arizona's Sereno 92 Girls White 1-0. Lucille Kozlov scored the winner in the 28th minute on a pass from Brittany Ambrose. That was followed by a 2-1 victory over Cal Odyssey Red in their final match of the tournament on Sunday morning. Goalkeeper Alyssa Williamson (60th minute) and substitute Shelby Beck (68th minute) scored the goals versus the California North outfit. Williamson's strike came from a punted clearance down field, with the ball bouncing twice in the windy conditions before beating the Cal Odyssey Red goalkeeper. Beck then headed home Vancouver's winner after connecting with a corner from Abigail Phillips.
