Late Ricketts equalizer wiped out as 'Caps fall in Montreal

match report vs. MTL

MONTRÉAL, QC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC battled back valiantly in the second half, but ultimately recorded a 2-1 loss against CF Montréal at Stade Saputo on Saturday.

The home side opened the scoring quickly, as Montreal’s Alistair Johnston crossed in a ball to Djordje Mihailovic, who saw his right footed shot go into the bottom right corner of the net inside the first minute of the match.

With some passages of back and forth play, Sartini’s squad looked to find the equalizer throughout the first half, but Montreal’s backline fended off Vancouver’s offensive progressions into the final third.

The 'Caps were dealt a blow late in the first half when attacking midfielder Ryan Gauld was substituted off for Pedro Vite in the 43rd minute of the match per MLS’ Concussion Substitute Initiative.

CF Montréal doubled their lead early in the second half, as Mihailovic’s pass connected to Romell Quioto, who converted his shot inside the box to make it 2-0 in the 47th minute.

Sartini's 'Caps would not give up, and in the 65th minute forward Brian White scored his first goal of the season following a corner to make the scoreline 2-1.

In the 72nd minute, the Blue & White continued to push, as White passed a through ball to Lucas Cavallini who saw his chance go wide of the far post.

With only seconds remaining in the match, midfielder Russell Teibert crossed in a ball to substitute Tosaint Ricketts, who headed the ball into the net in stoppage time. However, the goal was called back for offside after video review.

Up next for the Blue & White is a road match against Austin FC at Q2 Stadium next SAturday, April 23. Kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m. PT, with coverage begining live on TSN at 5 p.m. PT and AM730 at 4:30 p.m. PT.
