League1 BC: Girls Elite win in Victoria

VICTORIA, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC Girls Elite recorded a 3-1 victory at Centennial Stadium against Victoria Highlanders FC this Sunday afternoon.

The first half began with a high press in the final third from the Blue & White. Joy Kimwemwe closed down the goalkeeper and her deflection went into the net to open the scoring inside the 14th minute.

Fast forward to the 17th minute, the ‘Caps quickly found another opportunity. As Kierra Blundell controlled the ball in the area following a cross, her quick pass connected to Ashley Roberts. The midfielder’s strong shot curled its way into the top corner of the net to double the advantage.

Right before halftime, Victoria Highlanders FC responded on their own following a strong run in the midfield by Sofia Jones, her pass then sprung Mariel Solsberg on a counter. The forward’s goal put her squad back in the game in the 43rd minute of the match.

Following some patience down in the midfield after the halftime interval, substitute Emily Wong would claim possession back in the final third, which led to Anna Hauer’s quick strike extending her team’s lead to 3-1 in the 50th minute.

Whitecaps FC Girls Elite are back at home next Sunday, June 11, as they are set to host Nautsa’mawt FC at Ken Woods Field with a 12 p.m. PT kickoff.
