Captain Canada.
Whitecaps FC homegrown midfielder Liam Mackenzie scored two goals to send Canada to the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup, marking the country’s first appearance at the tournament since hosting it in 2007.Â
The Comox, BC native wore the captain's armband to lead Canada in their Concacaf U-20 quarterfinal against Jamaica.
In the 57th minute, he dangled at the top of the box before firing it past the goalkeeper to give his country the lead.
After Jamaica tied it, Mackenzie would score the winner on a penalty kick in extra time to make it 2-1.
Fellow Whitecaps FC BMO Academy product Anyole Peter subbed on in extra time to see out an eventual 3-1 win.
Canada now move on to the semifinals this coming Friday, August 7 at 7 p.m. PT, with a chance to potentially also qualify for the 2028 Summer Olympics. They will face either Mexico or Panama, with the match available to watch live on OneSoccer.
