LOS ANGELES, CA – Playing with 10 men for the majority of the match, Vancouver Whitecaps FC played their hearts out to clinch a playoff spot – a 1-1 statement draw versus nemesis Los Angeles FC.

In a topsy-turvy battle, Whitecaps FC centre back Tristan Blackmon was shown a straight red card in the seventh minute. But the 'Caps more than held their own, with Oliver Larraz putting the visitors in front, before LAFC striker Denis Bouanga equalized in the second half.

Whitecaps FC (15W-7L-6D, 51 points) moved four points clear at the top of the West, with another massive road match awaiting them on Wednesday at St. Louis CITY SC.

The match began with blazing runs that put each back line under pressure.

On a counter-attack, LAFC forward Son Heung-Min’s through ball sprung right winger Jacob Shaffelburg into the clear. Near the edge of the area, Blackmon collided with Shaffelburg – referee Guido Gonzales Jr. issued a red card to the defender.

The ensuing Son free kick saw Blue and White goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka in full stretch to parry the powerful drive.

To counter Blackmon being sent off, Whitecaps FC manager Jesper Sørensen sent on veteran defender Mathías Laborda for Emmanuel Sabbi. Though cut down to 10 men, the 'Caps pressed forward in a remarkable display of composure.

A thrilling series of lightning-fast touches saw midfielder Oliver Larraz tap ahead for Ryan Gauld. A heartbeat later, the captain sent sprinting striker Brian White in for a breakaway versus LAFC ’keeper Hugo Lloris.

The French World Cup winner took round one, as he covered up the 15-yard strike. At the other end, Takaoka upped the ante. He stood tall to deny a point-blank Son volley to keep the score nil-nil.

The Blue and White went in front just before halftime. Gauld spotted Ocampo down the right wing. He whipped in a cross for Larraz, who went skyward for an authoritative header that stung Lloris’ palms – but Larraz hustled to the ball first and hammered home into the top corner for 1-0.

A mere 40 seconds after play restarted, Bouanga replied with a header of his own. He equalized off a Sergi Palencia cross.

Eight minutes later, Bouanga thought he had collected a brace, but the flag went up for offside. Ocampo responded – his deflected attempt swerved three feet wide of Lloris’ woodwork.

Time and time again, Takaoka rose to the occasion to snatch a cross or loose ball, playing his part to secure an important point for the 'Caps.

Next up, the 'Caps face a big test in St. Louis this coming Wednesday, October 14 at 5:30 p.m. PCT. Fans can watch on Apple TV or check out the ’Caps & Taps list to find the nearest bar showing the match.

The ’Caps return home on Wednesday, October 28 to take on San Diego FC at 7:30 p.m. PCT.
