WEEKLY STORYLINES

WE MEET AGAIN: Vancouver Whitecaps FC conclude their Leagues Cup 2023 group stage this week against a familiar opponent as they renew acquaintances with fellow Western Conference side Los Angeles Galaxy on Sunday. The two sides last met two weeks ago as the 'Caps claimed a thrilling 4-2 victory at BC Place. Sunday's showdown could have major implications on progression to the Leagues Cup Round of 32 from West Group 3. As it stands, León have won the group with five points, while the 'Caps sit second with one point. If the Blue and White finish second in the group, they'll face the winner of West Group 1, which includes Tigres UANL, Portland Timbers, and San Jose Earthquakes.

GAULDEN RECORD: With his assist on Sergio Córdova's second goal against Club León, attacking midfielder Ryan Gauld cemented himself as the 'Caps leader in assists during the club's MLS era with 27 across all competitions, breaking the previous record of 26 held by former captain Pedro Morales. The Scotsman, who's been named to the MLS Team of the Matchday a team-high six times this season, has tallied eight goals as well as six assists in his last 10 appearances across all competitions.

LEAGUES CUP EXPLAINED: The inaugural Leagues Cup will see all 29 MLS clubs and all 18 LIGA MX clubs compete in a World Cup-style tournament to crown the best team between the two leagues, with the eventual winner qualifying directly to the Concacaf Champions Cup Round of 16. The runners-up and third-placed teams in the tournament will also qualify for the Concacaf Champions Cup. Each club will play two group stage matches, with the top two teams from each group progressing to the Round of 32. Similar to MLS NEXT Pro, the tournament features a no ties rule meaning if the score is level after 90 minutes, the winner of a match will be decided by a shootout with kicks from the penalty mark. Each team will receive a point if the game finishes tied and the winner of the subsequent shootout will earn an additional point.
