WEEKLY STORYLINES
CASCADIA CARDIAC 'CAPS: It was a Cascadia night to remember on Saturday, as Vancouver Whitecaps FC earned a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over rivals Portland Timbers in front of the largest crowd of the season at BC Place. The win marked just the second time in the club's MLS era, and the first since 2011, that the 'Caps scored multiple stoppage-time goals, courtesy of Thomas Müller's third of the season and a dramatic winner from Sebastian Berhalter. It was also a night that saw some Latin flair on display as Édier Ocampo scored his first goal of the season, while Ecuadorian U22 Initiative signing Bruno Caicedo made an electric debut off the bench in the second half. With the result, the 'Caps now hold a six-point cushion in the Cascadia Cup standings in their quest for a ninth title. The win confirmed Vancouver's best start to a season in their MLS era with 15 points in six games.
VISIT OF THE PIGEONS: Next up for the Blue and White is a showdown against Eastern Conference side New York City FC on Saturday, April 11, as the club hosts its sixth annual Indigenous Peoples Celebration Match. It'll be a battle of two of the league's best offensive sides, with the 'Caps leading MLS in goals scored with 17, while New York City sit tied for second with 14. In addition, Vancouver lead MLS in expected goals difference (11.8), big chances created (27), and the least expected goals conceded (3.80) entering Matchday 7 action. They also sit second in touches in the opposition's box (203) and third in tackles per match (19.3). Saturday's match will mark the Pigeon's fifth visit to Vancouver, with the last encounter at BC Place ending in a draw back in March 2022.
BERHALTER'S SCRIPT: It's been a remarkable start to the season for 'Caps midfielder Sebastian Berhalter. The 24-year-old, who has entered the top five in appearances for the club in the MLS era, leads the team in goal contributions this season with eight (four goals, four assists) and has already received four selections to the MLS Team of the Matchday through six games. The midfielder is also approaching 50 goal contributions across all competitions for the 'Caps, currently sitting with 48 (17 goals, 31 assists). Berhalter would become only the fifth player in the club's MLS era to reach that mark, behind Brian White (101), Ryan Gauld (99), Camilo Sanvezzo (59), and Pedro Morales (55). A FIFA World Cup 2026â„¢ hopeful with the United States' men's national team, Berhalter has started nine of his 11 appearances for the national team, most recently playing 79 minutes against Portugal during the March window.
COLIN MILLER'S KEYS TO THE MATCH
- Defensive awareness
New York City play some great football.
We must stay with runners and have good defensive awareness.
Maxi Moralez and Nicolás Fernández Mercau are quality for them.
- Müller, Berhalter influence
We must keep Müller involved, he's had a great influence over the last few games.
Berhalter as well.
Both are key in helping the team get into dangerous positions.
- Character
Right to the end, the character shown last week was amazing.
We will need this character from everyone again.
The crowd also deserves a special mention and they'll be back in full force on Saturday. I've said it before, they play a major role at this club.
Catch Asa Rehman and Colin Miller on the 730 CKNW radio call this Saturday, with the pre-match show kicking off at 4 p.m. PT.
