Preview: 'Caps return to Utah for showdown with Real Salt Lake

After jumping into a playoff spot thanks to a mid-week victory over Colorado Rapids at BC Place, Vancouver Whitecaps FC continue their playoff chase this Saturday, August 20 as they return to Utah to face Western Conference rivals Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium for the first time since being temporary tenants in the first half of the 2021 season. The match will mark the second meeting of the season between the two teams, with the 'Caps claiming a 2-1 victory at BC Place back on June 4 thanks to goals from Ranko Veselinović and Ryan Gauld.

BACK IN UTAH: After securing a crucial mid-week victory over Colorado Rapids at BC Place, the ‘Caps are set to hit the road as they return to their home for the first half of 2021 to visit Real Salt Lake for the first time since being a tenant at Rio Tinto Stadium. Vancouver has tallied a 4W-2L-0D record in their last six meetings with Salt Lake, scoring 11 goals in the process.

GAULDEN FORM: As he showed in 2021, Ryan Gauld has once again been an instrumental piece of the 'Caps offence this season, registering six goals and eight assists across all competitions, both career-highs with the club. Of those goal contributions, nine have come in Gauld's last eight matches in all competitions (four goals, five assists). The Scot will be looking to continue his golden form as the 'Caps push for a playoff spot in the final months of the season.

PLAYOFF CHASE: Entering the final eight matches of the regular season, the Blue and White sit seventh in the Western Conference with 33 points heading into the weekend's MLS action.
