WEEKLY STORYLINES

SHOWDOWN IN NORCAL: Does it get better than this? San Jose Earthquakes vs. Vancouver Whitecaps FC, first vs. second in MLS, both on historic pace. San Jose leads the league with 2.55 points per game, with Vancouver close behind at 2.5. Across the board, the numbers are nearly identical. Vancouver holds a slim edge in goal difference (+20 to +19), while both sides are tied with 26 goals scored. The 'Caps lead MLS with 51 big chances created, with San Jose second at 41. Defensively, it’s just as tight. Vancouver has conceded six goals, San Jose seven. Keep an eye on set pieces as Vancouver leads the league with 10 goals (including penalty kicks), while San Jose is the only team yet to concede from one.

PAYBACK AT PAYPAL PARK: Despite it being early May, this is already the second and final regular-season meeting between the sides, and it could carry significant weight in the Western Conference race. San Jose handed Vancouver its only loss of the season on March 21 at BC Place. That result came despite the 'Caps controlling 61% of possession and outshooting the Quakes 11-7, including a 6-2 edge in shots on target. Saturday presents a clear opportunity for a response.

52 YEARS AND COUNTING: Vancouver Whitecaps FC and San Jose Earthquakes first met on May 5, 1974, 52 years ago this week. Saturday marks the 60th all-time meeting between the clubs and the 39th in MLS play. Vancouver holds the historical edge (25W-22L-12D), but with both sides flying in 2026, this latest chapter could be one of the most meaningful yet.

COLIN MILLER'S KEYS TO THE MATCH

  • Stop the crosses
San Jose use the full width of the field and put crosses into the box.
    Preston Judd is a threat.
  • Keep the back door shut
Defensively from front to back, we have to be aware of the pace and shooting ability of San Jose.
  • Be patient
This top of the table clash will be decided by quality.
The attacking talent of the 'Caps, from Brian White to Bruno Caicedo, will be very influential.

Catch Asa Rehman and Colin Miller on the 730 CKNW radio call this Saturday, with the pre-match show kicking off at 7 p.m. PT.
