In this edition of 'Quality Time' presented by GE Appliances, Vancouver Whitecaps FC defensive midfielder Andrés Cubas shares his favourite spots in Vancouver, his excitement for the future of the club, and his experience playing against some of the best in the world.
The one that I enjoyed facing the most was for sure Messi, but to have had the opportunity to play against the likes of Mbappe, Neymar, James Rodriguez and a handful of players like them has been a real honour.
With the experience you have, you’ve been able to help youngsters in the club since you arrived. Describe what it’s like to be able to help guide the next generation of players coming through.
Yeah, I’m very grateful because when I was younger, my older teammates would always teach me things and guided me towards a path of professionalism and I’d like to do the same for the next generation of youngsters. I think the key to all of that is lead and play by example.
Has there been a favourite opponent you’ve faced in your career?
The one that I enjoyed facing the most was for sure Messi, but to have had the opportunity to play against the likes of Mbappe, Neymar, James Rodriguez and a handful of players like them has been a real honour.
It’s been more than a year since you arrived in Vancouver. You’ve helped the team win two Canadian Championships, a Cascadia Cup, reached the Concacaf Champions League, and clinch a spot in the playoffs. How do you feel having already reached all of these objectives with the club and what are your goals for the future with the ‘Caps?
I feel very happy to have been able to help the club and my teammates win two Canadian Championships, qualify for other competitions. We’re in the playoffs too which is something very important for us and we’re very determined to go all the way to the final. In the future, we want to keep winning titles, keep giving our all so that this club can always be fighting at the top in all the competitions that we play in and for that to happen, I think we need to be competitive in everything which will help the club be at the top of everything.
Who’s been your best mentor during your career?
My dad was my major influence because he was the first that introduced me to football, he always supported me during my career and in addition, he was my first coach.
What’s your favourite moment of your career with the ‘Caps so far?
My favourite moment with the club was when I scored my first goal at BC Place in front of our fans and also, obviously, the two times we became Champions of Canada were two very beautiful moments that I’ve enjoyed during my time with the club.
What do you love most about Vancouver?
What I love most about Vancouver is that it’s a great city but it also has lots of options to be in contact with nature.
Describe what it’s like to play at BC Place.
It’s always good to play in front of our fans and see that every time, more people are interested by our team and come to support us, that’s really good and it means we’re doing the right things on the pitch to bring more fans in.
Is there a favourite spot you have in the city? Could be a restaurant, park, shop or place.
My favourite spots would be the distinct beaches that the city has and the views they have.
What is one thing you haven’t done yet in Vancouver but want to do soon?
I’d love to go to Capliano Bridge.
Describe what it’s like to sing ‘Stand By Me’ with the fans after wins at BC Place.
It’s a really beautiful ritual we have because we feel that satisfaction of a victory and a job well done and we get to share that with our fans.
Who’s one celebrity you’d most like to meet?
Vin Diesel, because I’m a big fan of Fast And Furious and all his movies.
What’s your favourite genre of music?
I have two favourite genres of music, they’re Cumbia and Quarteto.
Who’s your favourite music artist?
My favourite artist is actually a band that’s called Q’ Lokura, honestly they’ve got a lot of good vibes and whenever I listen to them, it motivates me.
What’s your favourite movie?
Fast And Furious 5.
What is one thing outside of football you are really interested in?
One thing outside of football I really like to do is, whenever I have time, go fishing. I really enjoy it.
