Reyna scores first goal as 'Caps draw 1-1 with RSL in penultimate preseason match

PORTLAND, OR
 – Newcomer Yordy Reyna scored his first goal for Vancouver Whitecaps FC in his second preseason appearance as the 'Caps played to a 1-1 draw versus Real Salt Lake at the Portland Timbers preseason tournament on Sunday.

Whitecaps FC manager Carl Robinson made nine changes to his starting XI from last Thursday’s 1-1 draw against Minnesota United FC. Only central midfielder Andrew Jacobson and attacker Kekuta Manneh remained, with the latter moving to left wing from his previous central attacking role.
Giles Barnes looked the likeliest to score for the ‘Caps in the opening half, first hitting a shot over the crossbar on nine minutes, then striking one at goalkeeper Nick Rimando on 32 minutes after being played in by striker Kyle Greig, who was also very active in the first half.
Though both teams had chances, neither team could forge ahead before halftime as the score held at 0-0 going into the break.
Robinson made a pair of attack-minded substitutions going into the last 45 minutes, bringing on Reyna for Marco Bustos, as well as Cristian Techera for Kekuta Manneh.
In the 57th minute, the ‘Caps were involved in their first Video Assistant Replay (VAR) decision. On the play, Techera’s arm came in contact with the face of RSL midfielder Ricardo Velasco. After review to determine if there was a red card infraction, Techera was issued a yellow card from the referee.
The first goal of the match came in the 70th minute. After substitute Alphonso Davies collected an RSL turnover at the top of the box, Reyna quickly received the ball, cut past a defender and curled a shot off the far post and in for his first tally wearing the Blue and White.
With eight minutes to go, Salt Lake tied things up through the foot of substitute Jordan Allen, who broke in on goal and beat goalkeeper Paolo Tornaghi for a 1-1 final score.
The ‘Caps play their final preseason match this coming Wednesday, February 15 versus the host Portland Timbers. One week later, they begin their CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal series on the road against New York Red Bulls on Wednesday, February 22, with the decisive second leg taking place at BC Place on Thursday, March 2.
