Table watching: ‘Caps trail FC Dallas by one point ahead of crucial home-and-home

Koffie vs. Castillo FC Dallas

One point.

That’s all Vancouver Whitecaps FC need to clinch a playoff berth on Wednesday when FC Dallas come to town, but you can bet they’ll be gunning for three.

As you can see below, the ‘Caps trail Dallas by just one point for second place in the always-competitive Western Conference. Carl Robinson’s troops are also two points back of the conference-leading LA Galaxy, who played to a 1-1 draw with Seattle Sounders FC on Sunday night, with a game in hand.

So what does all this mean?

A top two finish in the Western Conference is still within Vancouver’s reach – especially considering the fact that they have back-to-back games with FC Dallas coming up. The top two teams in the conference will get a bye to the conference semifinals. Teams three and four will also guarantee a home playoff match, but would be forced to play in the Knockout Round.

It also means there’s a whole lot riding on these next two games with FC Dallas.

Guess the MLS schedule makers knew what they were doing.
