Team BC made a winning start to the men's soccer competition at the 2009 Canada Games after a 5-0 victory over Northwest Territories on Monday afternoon.
Vancouver Whitecaps FC Residency striker Coulton Jackson scored twice in the first half to lead Bart Choufour's side to victory in their opening Pool D match. Harry Lakhan, Jordan Whitehead, and Nolan Moore were also on the scoresheet for British Columbia in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.
Team BC made a fine start to Monday's contest, as they ran out to a four-goal lead inside the first half-hour. Jackson scored the match winner on 10 minutes after volleying home Whitehead's cross.
On 22 minutes, Jackson doubled Team BC's advantage after converting Ashley Ankiewicz's low cross for 2-0. Six minutes later, British Columbia made it 3-0 after Lakhan found the top corner of the NWT goal from 20 yards out after taking a Moore pass from the left.
Team BC then took a 4-0 lead into the halftime break, as Whitecaps Prospects Men's team defender/midfielder Whitehead fired home after taking a fine through ball from Jackson on the half-hour mark.
The second half saw NWT put as many as 10 players behind the ball, in a bid to stop Team BC from making the scoreline more lopsided. As a result, Choufour's side struggled to break their Arctic-based opponents down throughout the course of the second 45 minutes. Team BC's fifth and final goal came in the 90th minute, as Moore's long-range strike found the back of the NWT net.
Though delighted to start the tournament with a comfortable win, Team BC were dealt a big injury blow, as Jackson suffered a broken leg during the second half of Monday's match. The youngster is due to have surgery on the broken leg on Tuesday, with the Surrey, BC, native to miss the rest of this week's men's soccer competition in PEI.
