Vancouver Whitecaps FC add striker Kyle Greig to MLS roster

VANCOUVER, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced on Monday that the club has signed striker Kyle Greig to an MLS contract for 2017, with options for 2018, 2019, and 2020.



Greig joins goalkeeper Spencer Richey, defender/midfielder Brett Levis, and midfielder Alphonso Davies as players who have made the move to the first team roster from Whitecaps FC 2.


“Kyle has an exceptional work ethic and a nose for goal,” said Whitecaps FC head coach Carl Robinson. “He did a fantastic job as captain of a very young WFC2 squad last season. It’s a pleasure to have him as part of our group.”

Greig, 26, joins the first team after tallying a team-high 13 goals, in addition to three assists, for Whitecaps FC 2 in 2016, including playoffs. The 6-foot-2 captain started 28 of his 30 overall USL appearances, helping guide WFC2 to a 15-point improvement in the regular season and a Western Conference Final finish, while playing every minute in the playoffs and scoring a goal in each of their two postseason wins.

Hailing from Olathe, Kansas, Greig made his first-team debut in the international friendly against Crystal Palace FC on July 19. He then made three substitute CONCACAF Champions League appearances, assisting on the added-time winner in his homecoming at Sporting Kansas City on September 13. The away win over Sporting KC, helped the 'Caps clinch their first-ever quarterfinal berth.


Greig began his professional career in 2013 with Wilmington Hammerheads FC, before spending two seasons with Oklahoma City Energy FC. He has totaled 35 goals and seven assists in 106 appearances in his four USL seasons, including two trips to the Western Conference Final.


In addition, Greig scored three goals in three U.S. Open Cup appearances with Oklahoma City and Wilmington.
