VANCOUVER, BC ā€“ Vancouver Island Whitecaps FC.

As the ā€˜Caps get set to welcome fans for a special home match at Starlight Stadium in Langford, BC this Wednesday, Whitecaps FC announced that for the next three days it has unofficially changed the club's name to embrace the local community.

As part of the initiative, club avatars have been changed and limited-edition merchandise will be sold in stadium at the February 7 battle with Mexican side Tigres UANL. More than 90 per cent of seats have already been sold for the Concacaf Champions Cup opening match. Premium suites are sold out, and limited group tickets are still available by contacting groups@whitecapsfc.com. Remaining tickets can be purchased at ticketmaster.ca/whitecaps.

ā€œAs we enter our 50th Anniversary season, itā€™s fitting that we play a match on Vancouver Island, a community that has passionately supported this club since the beginning,ā€ said Axel Schuster, Whitecaps FC chief executive officer. ā€œThis club belongs to the community, so we are pleased to do this small gesture to show our appreciation for the warm welcome that we have been receiving. While we are expecting a strong walk-up crowd, we encourage fans to get their tickets ahead of time to avoid missing out.ā€

With the MLS regular season fast approaching, Vancouver Island fans will also have five 4:30 p.m. PT kickoffs to look forward to at BC Place this season. The season opener on Saturday, March 2 versus Charlotte FC will have the upper bowl open, more than 25,000 tickets already sold, and will be one of the five afternoon kicks.
