HERRIMAN, UT – Whitecaps FC 2 fell to a 3-1 loss against fellow Western Conference side Real Monarchs at Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman, Utah this Friday evening.
The first half started with the young ‘Caps finding a strong opportunity inside the 19th minute of the match, which was then followed with a save from Monarchs goalkeeper Gavin Beavers.
As the match progressed, an attempt from the home team came through in the 40th minute, with forward Axel Kei’s strike being strongly held away by ‘Caps keeper Max Anchor.
After a weather delay, the second half would start off quickly and see the Monarchs opening the scoring in the 48th minute, as Kei’s pass connected to forward Teron Williams, who’s strike found the back of the net to give his squad a 1-0 lead.
In a quick turn of events, the opponents would double their lead in the 50th minute of the match. Following a run from Tyrone Mondi, his right footed finish slotted the ball home to double his side’s lead moments later.
With the second half continuing, Kei’s short pass would connect to Williams, with the forward grabbing a brace in the 65th minute. His right footed shot inside the penalty area cushioned his team’s advantage later on in the game.
The Blue & White would find their own breakthrough in the 81st minute of the match, as midfielder Pipé Fernandez-Salvador scored to pull one back in the later stages.
It would not be enough, however, as the home side took the win.
As the young ‘Caps continue their hunt for a playoff spot, the squad returns home to Swangard Stadium for a showdown against St Louis CITY2 next Sunday, August 14. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. PT. Tickets are complimentary for Whitecaps FC MLS season ticket members, or $10 at the gate.
