WFC2, Switchbacks FC battle to 2-2 draw

WFC2 - McKendry - Colorado Spring Switchbacks

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – Spencer Richey made five saves for Whitecaps FC 2 (4W-8L-4D) in a 2-2 draw with Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC (6W-6L-6D) on Saturday at Weidner Field.

WFC2 opened the scoring in the 38th minute through Marco Bustos, who hit the side-netting with a perfectly placed penalty after Thomas Sanner was hauled down from behind. It was Bustos’ fifth goal in as many USL matches this season, with four coming from the penalty spot.

Then, just five minutes later, Sanner found the back of the net himself, getting on the end of a Deklan Wynne cross at the back post and powering home a header off the near post and in.

Colorado Springs controlled the run of play in the opening half, putting WFC2 under pressure with seven corners and forcing Richey into three saves, but the ‘Caps took a 2-0 lead into the break.

That scoreline would be short-lived.

Switchbacks FC’s Masta Kacher cut into Vancouver’s lead in the 48th minute with a curling strike from the left side of the box. Then in the 58th minute, Kevaughn Frater blasted in a free kick from distance to draw the game level, setting up an entertaining final half hour.

In the 79th minute, Bustos just missed the far post from the top of the box after a nice one-two with right winger Kadin Chung. And in the 90th minute, Richey denied Conner Bevans with a diving save at the near post to secure a point for the visiting ‘Caps.

WFC2 now return home for a pair of matches at UBC Thunderbird Stadium next week – a nooner vs. Swope Park on Wednesday followed by a tilt with Reno 1868 FC on Saturday.
