Perhaps Cristian Techera should be a soccer pundit after his playing days are over.
Last week, a number of Vancouver Whitecaps FC players made their predictions for Euro 2016. Germany was a popular choice – France and Belgium got some love too.
But Techera made some waves by picking Hungary – yes, Hungary – to win the tournament.
Techera’s prediction was discussed in a major Hungarian newspaper and generated some buzz on social media, as you can see below.
Well, what do you know?
Hungary pulled off a major upset in their tournament opener this morning, defeating Austria 2-0. So, we thought this would be a good time to ask Techera: why Hungary?
“I wanted to pick a surprise team,” he said. “Like Uruguay, Hungary are a smaller country with a great football history. They also have a player who was in MLS last year, Krisztian Nemeth. Who knows, maybe they will surprise people and I will be correct with my prediction.”
Maybe, maybe not.
It will be interesting to track their progress either way. Who doesn’t love an underdog?
