With the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) season now at an end for 2011, this week’s instalment of ‘Women’s Weekly’ is focused on the progression of Vancouver Whitecaps FC women’s team players taking part in the NCAA championship tournament in the United States.
As well, the Whitecaps FC Girls Elite team are still undefeated in game play, but had no matches this past week. There is some news, so be sure to check out the full Girls Elite update below.
NCAA:
“It’s painful and I wanted to take this team farther than I did. That is kind of how I am and I wanted to prove that we could go as far as we were supposed to. I mean we were No. 2 for a reason,” said an emotional Sydney Leroux after UCLA lost to University of San Diego in the NCAA tournament. (Mansi Sheth – Daily Bruin)
Lexi Marton had a helping hand in last week’s NCAA game versus Wake Forest University, but unfortunately, it was not enough as both her, Erin McNulty, and the rest of the Penn State University Nittany Lions, as they lost 4-2. The loss marked the end of a successful regular season for Penn State. (GoPSUSports.com)
Ranee Premji and Amber Brooks fell to UCF in a tight match that came down to a penalty shootout. University of North Carolina was the 19th seed in the tournament and was satisfied with this year’s third-round improvement. (tarheelblue.com)

GIRLS ELITE:
Due to a cancellation of this week’s game, the Girls Elite team have a game tomorrow and one next Tuesday. Tomorrow’s match is against Vancouver’s Westside FC premier women, while Tuesday’s game is against Columbus FC premier women – both are 7:45 p.m. PT kickoffs.
To continue on the theme of universities and where this year’s Girls Elite players are choosing to attend next season. Goalkeeper Zoe Makrigiannis has declared her intent to play at San Jose State University in California. She has been a part of the Girls Elite program for two years now, but previous to that, was part of Tsawwassen Triple Threat and Surrey Football Club. The San Jose University Spartans struggled this season with just six wins, but are clearly looking forward to a stronger season, with the addition of Makrigiannis in their program.
