With the conclusion of the CIS season, and the NCAA tournament coming to an end this coming weekend, the focus for Women’s Weekly has now turned to Whitecaps FC Girls Elite Program.
The program aims to develop female soccer talent in British Columbia. Through a highly trained staff and an already promising talent pool, the Girls Elite program hopes to continue developing players from U-14 to U-18 levels by offering camps and training sessions. As well, the U-18 Girls Elite team has the opportunity to play a full season together as part of the program, which enables them to consistently sharpen their skills by playing against other teams from all over North America.
The Girls Elite team’s latest opportunity to face top competition comes this weekend in Atlanta, Georgia. Starting Thursday and running through until Sunday, the Atlanta Final Four College Showcase is a prestigious tournament where over 350 college coaches will be in attendance to watch top female players from around North America display their talents. It is an opportunity for the girls to be viewed and recruited by college coaches, as well as an opportunity for the team to watch the NCAA Division I championship semifinals and final.
In preparation for this event, the Girls Elite squad took on Columbus FC - who play in the Premier Division of the Metro Women’s Soccer League - on Tuesday evening. The end result was a convincing Whitecaps FC victory, as they defeated Columbus FC 4-1. Sam Dion, Aman Shergill, Elise Wyatt, and Allie Wiebe all registered goals in Tuesday’s friendly. With the win and a number of goals under their belt, the Girls Elite side are ready for their trip to the Peach State this weekend!
